Forget the negative reviews -- this is a great product!!!
By Len C
If I had read the reviews on this site before I purchased the vacuum at Costco for about $30, I might not have purchased this vacuum and would have missed out on a getting a really good value in a small wet/dry vac. Glad I didn't read first!!!
<<<< A little background for this review: >>>>
I rarely review products, but the negative reviews for this vac are so far away from my experience that I feel that this particular product is getting a bad rap.
I presently own Shop Vac 5.5hp/16 gallon (2" hose) and 2.5hp/2.5 gallon (1-1/4" hose)wet/dry vacuums in addition to the Stanley one that is under review.
I have a technical engineering and an aircraft mechanic background.
I have just completed a remodel of my kitchen and used the vacuum extensively for the past 4 weeks.
<<<< My review: >>>>
This Stanley 2.8hp/4 gallon wet/dry vac is a very capable unit for what it is designed for. If you are buying a small vacuum and hoping it will perform like a large one, your expectations are unreasonable. This unit is every much as capable as my small 2.5hp/2.5 gallon Shop Vac unit.
Many comments have been made about the suction of this vacuum -- "Barely any power ..." "Sucks at Sucking", etc. In my kitchen remodel, I have done drywall work which meant a lot of vacuuming up of the dust created by the sanding of the joint compound. I have also used it to vacuum up sawdust and other things that yield to gravity and end up on the floor.
I really became impressed with it's suction power the first time I emptied the vacuum. Not that it was loosing suction, it just seemed I had vacuumed up a lot of dust and it must be time to empty it. The cleanable, reusable filter was packed solid with white dust, but there had been no reduction in the suction. I was really blown away.
By the way, that reusable, washable filter is a REALLY NICE FEATURE. You just shake the filter out, or blow it out with compressed air, and then wash it with water. Once it is dry, you are ready to go again. What a deal. Saves a lot of coins on replacing a filter bag. Wish my Shop Vacs had the same thing.
The vacuum housing is stainless steel as compared to the poly plastic canisters of my Shop Vac units. Contrary to what other reviews have implied, this is not a flimsy canister. Treated with respect, it should hold up for a long time.
Several reviews have commented on the 1-1/4" hose. This is a very common size of hose for this size of vacuum. It is unfair and unreasonable to complain about the size if you really needed a 2" hose. You will spend a lot more money and have a much larger canister to drag around as well.
The hose on my Shop Vac 2.5hp/2.5 gallon unit is of the same size and same material/design. The Shop Vac hose also has a deflector (like the Stanley hose) built into the end of the hose that attaches to the canister. I am guessing that the deflector is added to deflect incoming liquids as the hose outlet, by nature of the geometrics of the smaller canisters, is almost on top of the center filter frame. One could cut it off, but I expect there is an engineering reason for it.
The hose length of the Stanley unit is about the same as the one on my smaller Shop Vac unit. I did take a spare 1-1/4" hose that I had and fashioned a coupler to join the two hoses together to give me a longer reach. But as noted all 1-1/4" hoses seem to be about the same length. I couldn't find a longer one at the big box home improvement stores.
The Stanley hose makes a positive attachment to the canister with a twist-on connection similar to my large Shop Vac unit, whereas my small Shop Vac unit hose only attaches with a friction fit. So, that is a good feature of this low cost unit. I have noticed, as another reviewer has noted, that I need to really push/twist on the attachments well or they will try to separate from the hose.
When I first saw the vac, I assumed that it would be rather top heavy and have a tendency to tip over when pulled. I have been pleasantly surprised to find this has not been the case. To the contrary, I note that when I am pulling it by the hose I tend to be pulling up slightly and this seems to provide a natural counter to any tipping tendency. My small 2.5 gallon Shop Vac is short and squatty and tends to roll over when pulled by the hose.
The taller profile of this Stanley vac has turned out to be a positive thing when it comes to picking it up and moving it around, as compared to my small 2.5 gallon Shop Vac. The Stanley handle is much higher off of the floor compared to the Shop Vac unit, so there is less bending over when you need to pick it up.
<<<< THE BOTTOM LINE >>>>
For about $30 at Costco, this vacuum is a really great deal. Even at the Amazon prices, it is a fair price.
The washable and reusable filter is one of my favorite features of this vacuum package. The amount of suction that it produced with the filter packed solid with fine drywall dust blew me away. At its price point, it is designed and built well.
I will be keeping the Stanley set up with the washable filter for dry pickup and keep my small Shop Vac for those little spills and doggy accidents around the house. The big Shop Vac with the 2" hose will be used where the bigger size would be more appropriate.

pathetic vac!
By greg
of the few reviews i've written on amazon over the years, i've NEVER written a "bad" review--only 5 stars--until now. i'm a contractor and was wanting a little wet/dry vac to go along with my big one when i saw this at costco. here are the problems. it has a high center of gravity so it's unstable and may tip. the biggest disappointment is the small hose 1 1/4. more problematic is where the hose enters the canister--it has a plastic fitting that makes an immediate 90 degree downturn, which isn't uncommon for shop vacs, but has a plastic air deflector built into this piece that BLOCKS the inflow of particles. it clogs almost immediately if you're trying to suck up hardly anything that has a little "mass" to it. the filtration system isn't great, the suction is reasonable. if you're looking for a cute little vacuum at a reasonable price that will handle VERY small chores, then this may be the vac for you. but, if you have greater expectations, i can't imagine you would be satisfied. spend more money, get more horsepower and at least a 1 1/2" diameter hose.

Well engineered
By 7Duey
I cant believe some of the reviews here, First af all there is PLENTY of suction. The plastic parts are thick and sturdy. The cord is longer than most other shop vacs, and there is a handy grove around the top to store it.As the title says "this is a well engineered unit"
