Great size and portability, but poor operation
By RichS
I have owned numerous shop vacs over the years and the WD4070 was appealing in that it offers small size without sacrificing power. However, I cannot recommend this vacuum due to other significant drawbacks. The inside of the canister has surprisingly little space to accumulate debris. The motor and filter consume the majority of the canister space. Seeing how the filter would just sit in all the debris, I decided to purchase and install the bags. My first clean up job was my garage floor. The floor had small dried leaves, road soot, and paper scraps to be cleaned up. The initial suction was quite impressive. I could place the nozzle on a small dried leaf and it had enough power to suck in the leaf and break it up. However, after 25 minutes of use, the suction power was diminished. I would place the nozzle on a leaf, and it would pick it up, but it no longer had enough suction to break it up and suck it down the pipe. The problem is that, even when properly installed, the bag causes a clog where the hose enters the canister. There was no single large item causing the clog, just a bunch of crumbled leaves and soot. On its own, the vacuum can't move the debris from the opening of the bag towards the rear of the bag. It also uses only the right side of the bag, not the left. I manually cleared the opening and forced the debris to the rear of the bag. After 10 more minutes of vacuuming, focusing on only smaller debris, it clogged again. Another drawback is opening the canister shell. There are two handles, one on either side, that have to be released. The problem is that they are very stiff and have a very small lip for your fingers. I had to use a long screw driver to pry up the handles each time I had to get into the canister to clear the bag. Overall, the small size and suction are great, but I'd rather deal with the bulkiness of a full size vac rather than stopping every few minutes to clear the clogs in the bag.

Nice house vac
By ChrisF
For tough household clean-up I needed a good value in a strong vacuum cleaner but not the greater capacity of the larger Ridgid shop-vacs. This 4-gallon "canister-like" model was the ideal size. The vacuum itself is very well-priced and I outfitted it with all the necessary accessories - filter bags, Heavy Duty Cleaning Kit, and the 10-foot tough ProHose - to tackle tough cleaning jobs in a well-equipped manner.
The vacuum itself would get a five-star rating, but alas it is the total system that must work well together. The problem is that the top extension wand only "press fits" into the adapter at the end of the hose. Every other critical connection has a latch of some kind. So this friction joint is the weak link. When using the floor brush with the wands, the wand constantly wants to work its way out of the hose adapter. Depending on your grip, either the wand or the hose will unexpectedly fall to the floor as you are working. Only constant attention and conscious application of pressure and/or twisting action via a two-handed grip will prevent this separation.
It is almost a show-stopper, but the system vacuums so well that I've kind of adapted to it. It is not so much an issue when the smaller tools are used directly on the hose without the wands.
*** UPDATE 22-Dec-12 ***
Looking back over this review (written two years back), I felt it helpful to clarify that my criticism of the loose fit to the hose and resulting hassle applies only to the so-called ProHose that I bought with the vac. Sometime after writing that review, I got the brilliant idea to try the smaller hose that came with the vac. The smaller hose doesn't have the same issue. I saved the ProHose and still use it for some "long reach" jobs but the included hose stays on for daily use.

Exactly What I needed
By BobbyCA
There are some reviews here that I think are a bit unfair... People are complaining they couldn't sop up the water in their basement, broke fingernails trying to open the canister, and it fills up too quickly... Guess what, its a 4 gallon shop vac!!! (not 40)... If you use this for what's its designed for you'll absolutely love it... I use it on my drywall sanding and pickup, Mitersaw attachement, and quick debris cleanup (when installing flooring)... It's lightweight, extremely powerful, and 99% dustless... I usually place a cloth filter over its cartridge filter just to make filter cleanup easier... I bought the muffler for it too and now when I vacum up drywall dust, I don't see even a spec of it come out the other end... Yes its a wet vac too (technically), but if I'm gonna pickup water, I'll use my 16 gallon unit (any amount of water this vac could hold would be just as easy to towel dry)...
If you're in the business of finish work (especially in a customers house), drywall, flooring installation, etc., and need to keep debris/dust to a minimum get this vac... I've been using it for about 2 years now and can't see myself going to anything else...
