5How do I love thee, Hitachi portable saw? Let me count the ways...
By Little Old Lady
"Power" may be in the eye of the beholder because this saw has done everything I've asked it to, including ripping full-measure 2x4s (108 year old heart pine) and numerous cross cuts and beveled cuts. What I really really like about it is (are):

1. its weight - I'm strong but small and the corded larger saw was so heavy for me it verged on being dangerous for me to use near the end of the day when I was tired. This never gets tiring, even up on a 16' extension ladder.

2. its balance - The weight is balanced even with the large capacity battery, and that makes it a joy to use, easier to guide accurately and, especially, easy to juggle (well, not juggle :); 'hold') the saw and wood at the same time.

3. the proportions of the handle - small enough for my small hands to grip securely and cushioned to be comfortable to grip. The safety switch is a bit awkward to reach but that's good (no accidentally turning it on).

4. the battery life and charge-holding-time of the Hitachi blade-type lithium batteries is wonderful and I like being able to swap this around with my drill.

I honestly wish I'd invested in a whole set of Hitachi 18-volt lithium tools together but wasn't that familiar with the brand, so I've been buying them one by one.

Oh, 5. blade life with the blade that came on it has been pretty impressive, too. I've cut a pile of lumber (a LOT), even hit a few buried nails (unintentionally) and it shows no sign of dulling.

5Great saw
By SHIRLEY HILL
Light weight, no extenslion cord and uses the same battery as my drill and sawsall. Has a light so I can see my caulk mark. Great saw. Would recommend it anyone. Quick and easy to use on small jobs, where I used to use a handsaw..

1Very Weak! Disappointed!
By Vaughn
Bought this from Amazon when it was on sale and did not use it until after I could not RMA it (or I would have returned it). I own several Hitachi power tools and I love them, but I was very disappointing with this tool. I guess if had never used a cordless saw before I might give it a better rating, but I have owned and used an 18V Makita 6 1/2 " Cordless Saw since 1997. It still works fine, but the batteries are hard to find and cost over $100 so I decided to go with a new lithium Ion model and since I already have several Hitachi slide type batteries, the choice was easy. My 15 year old Makita saw runs circles around this Hitachi saw, even with the batteries that are almost gone. This Hitachi saw is just too weak for anything other then light work. Yes, you can cut things like OSB sheathing. It can cut through a new fresh 2X4 as well. But try to cut something bigger or heaven forbid rip something and the saw just stops. When this saw encounters any kind of strain, it just simply turns off like when the battery goes dead. You have to wait a few seconds and then it will turn back on. But as soon as you put it under any kind of strain again, it shuts off, even if the battery is fully charged.

The bottom line is that Hitachi designed this saw to cut thin stuff like 1/2 OSB sheathing. You don't need a 6 1/2" saw to do that kind of work; a 4" saw will work just fine for that. You need a 61/2" saw to cut bigger stuff like 2X4, 2X6, 2X8 etc. This saw struggles to do this and in most cases cannot do it for anything larger then a 2X4.

Once again, I have a 15 year old Makita 18v cordless saw that has never been worked on and it can run circles around this Hitachi saw. You would think that after 15 years of technological advancement Hitachi would be able make something better. Shame on Hitachi for producing such a poor product.
