Great saw except battery system is confusing
By Albert Yeh
The sawzall is great, it replaced my old junk ryobi corded one after 6 years of off and on use. The rubber over mold is great for long term use and really feels comfortable in the hand. Electric brake is a nice feature if you don't want to wait for the blade to stop every time you make another cut. Of all the 18v cordless recip saws, this one has probably the BEST weight balance (with the XC battery), which is crucial in reducing fatigue especially after just a few cuts. Ignore all the stats about "stroke length" or "strokes per min" cause in the end, they all mean pretty much nothing. A saw having more SPM doesn't mean it cuts faster, it just means the blade move faster. What makes a faster cut is how you use the saw! What's crucial for a recip saw is how it feels and how much vibration it produces. In that aspect, this saw is the best of its class. Ultimately the saw is worth the money. However, other reviews mentioned problems with Milwaukee's battery compatibility and their cordless tools. Here's what I know (and figured out) about it.
- V18 system: The old v18 batteries will NOT work with the saw, it's a completely different line.
- M18 system: Here's where it gets confusing. Milwaukee made two different m18 batteries. The first one, Lithium-ion, is what you see most of the time. However, last year they added ANOTHER line called the "red" lithium series. For both these series, they released a compact and a larger XC battery. The difference between the series is almost none, however if you take a look at the front and the side, you'll see that the red lithium series says red lithium on it while lithium ion just says lithium ion.
-Li-on system: If you have the M18 li-on batteries, ONLY the XC fat battery will work for the saw. The compact battery will not fit. This applies for all tools except drills/light/radio, etc...
-Red lithium system: If you have the M18 red lithium batteries, BOTH of them work. It does not matter if it's fat or compact. Both work for all the M18 cordless tools.
Hope that clarified things a bit.

Milwaukee 18 volt sawzall cordless reciprocating saw
By Tamara Hanger
This is a good overall quality saw. One note to mention was the decription lacked enough information on what battery this saw takes. It does take an 18 volt battery, but check with Milwaukee to learn exactly what type of 18 volt. The 18 volt battery I had wouldn't fit this saw. So, I had to buy another 18 volt that would work.

Great Now
By John W. Taylor
This was purchase in a kit 2 years ago with a drill and saw. The Li-ion batteries where horrible worse than Ni-Cad at the time. Back then they had a 5 year warranty.
3 months ago the Milwaukee rep comes by sees his tools sitting in the corner. He hands over new M18 Red Li-ion batteries.
What a world of difference. This saw now cuts 6 - 4x4s on 1 charge
Saw has good blade speed and the quick release blade mechanism is the best.
The overhead protection is annoying.....not a fan of that.....with only 1/2" more cut and the tool stops running....but waiting a few second it starts again.
Dec 2013 Update
Sawzall is now broken. It spent most of the time on the shelf.
The battery charger stopped working. I called the local repair depot and they commented that the chargers do not last.
