great mid-size saw
By Jon E.
I've had the Makita 10.8v("12vMax") reciprocating saw for a couple weeks now, and really like it despite some limitations. It's great for small plumbing/metalwork jobs, medium wood/demolition tasks, and kicks butt with a big pruning blade.
pros:
takes standard 4-6in recipro blades
great ergonomics, with body/barrel grip and pistol grip hand positions
dual triggers on both handhold positions
good blade speed and responsive variable speed control
heavy enough to brace the blade movement, but light in the hand
very compact, reaches into places other 12v recipro saws (M12 hackzall, Bosch) won't fit
10.8v 1.2ah li-ion batteries provide sufficient power, but tiny and light
cons:
tempting to use heavier 6-8in blades and treat it like a full-size sawzall
10.8v 1.2ah li-ion batteries are too small for heavy jobs
would be nice to have adjustable P-C style clamping shoe in future versions
So why 4 stars? Because this does everything I need a small or medium sized saw to do, and for anything more serious, a corded sawzall is more appropriate. For example, one 10.8v battery gets thru lots of copper easily, or 8-10 cuts of 1/2in iron pipe, but only two cuts thru old 1-in steel pipe. I could get a saw with a bigger battery, but an 18v saw would only get thru 4-5, so why bother? This saw competently handles all the small and medium jobs in a truly compact tool, and for heavy stuff, I'd need a corded saw anyway. The RJ01 is a nice upgrade and worthy successor to the stalwart old 9v Makita 4390 saw, with lots more capability. Add in the work light on the front, and the really solid tool-less blade clamp, and this one's a winner.

Handy, Handy, Handy
By R. Hart
Simply put, this is a well thought out versatile reciprocating saw; and because of its size it is about as handy and convenient as it gets. It can be operated from any angle with either hand. It has a regular trigger switch and also a paddle switch if you need to choke up on the work. Don't knock this tool because you don't think it will handle the same jobs as its big brother, because it probably will. The blade changing is a snap; and it takes the standard sawzall blade. I'm really liking all these 12V Max tools; they are light, powerful and easy to carry, and you can get into tight spaces. Once you use this saw, you won't be reaching for its big brother version unless you really have to.
8/1/12- I Just found another delightful application for this tool. I bought a 10" pruning blade that gives you free license in the yard; if you can reach it, you can cut it! This is a fantastic little pruning saw.

Great little saw
By NCarmody
I just got this little saw for my birthday. I must say it is much better than expected, and much smaller too. You can easily hold it with one hand if you need to. It has the power to cut through most matterials. I would not use it for serious demo, but that's what the bigger sawzall is for. However I can see myself using this more often. One of the best features this product has over the competition is the additional paddle trigger. This allows the user to use the saw with one hand, while applying pressure, and securing the object being cut with the other. You can not do this with any other 12v(10.8) saw. The paddle trigger allows you to apply pressure in the direction of the cut without any additional effort. Great saw.
