(CNN) -- A man convicted of four murders in 1993 has escaped from a Michigan prison, and authorities believe he has abducted a woman using a knife or box cutter, the Michigan Department of Corrections said.
Correctional officials said they discovered Michael David Elliot was missing from the Ionia Correctional Facility on Sunday night.
The Michigan Department of Corrections said it appears Elliot abducted a woman from Ionia using a knife or box cutter and drove to Elkhart, Indiana, where they stopped for gas. The woman was able to escape at the gas station in Indiana and call police, officials said.
