Versatile and powerful but not perfect....
By Y. R. Wu
Summary: Impressive and versatile tool that could use some improvements. May not be for the novice.
I had the opportunity to review the Dremel SM20-02 120-Volt Saw-Max Tool Kit which is a very similar tool. Compared to the Dremel, the Rotozip is a LOT bigger, heavier, and more versatile. Unfortunately, the old saying "Jack of all trades, master of none" applies here.
The RotoSaw, at it's most basic, is a handheld router /die grinder which also has a geared head that converts it to a 3-1/2" grinding disk/cutting wheel. It's nice that you can use this as a spiral cutter, though it's bulk means that you won't be going into the same corners that the RotoZip RZ1500-30 5.7 Amp Spiral Saw Kit or the DEWALT DW660SK 5-Amp 30,000 RPM Rotary Cut-Out Tool with 1/8-Inch and 1/4-Inch Collets, Side Handle, and Circle Cutter can get into, but the additional saw capability is well worth it.
The Dremel has only a 3" blade, while the RotoSaw has a 3-1/2" blade (The Rotosaw blades, particularly the metal cutting fiber blades, are less expensive than the Dremel.) More importantly, the guard/guide can be removed. This is good because it is more flexible, however it's not terribly safe so I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a very careful and experienced type.
Speaking of which, the Rotosaw guard needs some refinement. you can rotate it to either side but the issue I have with it is that the guard does not lock well into place. There is a cam lock but this doesn't work well. When you crank it all the way down you can keep the guard from rotating *too* easily but then the cam lever is very hard to press into place.
Similarly, the rotary cutter base flexes a bit much for my liking, and noticably more than the 5.7 amp rotozip. This is aggravated by the extra size and weight of this tool. A little more plastic in the right place would have made it significantly stiffer.
The Dremel is a good 10-15% smaller in the hand than the RotoSaw, and is also rated at 6 amps. It's a lot of power for it's size, and quieter and smoother than the RotoSaw. Not suprising since there are extra gears and shaft bits for the RotoSaw to turn the corner. Using them side by side there wasn't much difference in cutting speed, but the dremel was more accurate, ergonomic and easy to control. It tested them on 1/8" x 1" steel bar, 1/4" steel rod, Cherry and Spruce. As a "mini circular saw" the Dremel IS better, but the flexibility, additional attachments and the additional features the RotoSaw has like adjustable speed and soft start make the choice pretty easy.
Likes; Soft start, adjustable speed control, adjustable guard/guide
Dislikes: Bulky, wobbly spiral guard/guide, saw guard/guide doesn't lock well

Great tool for a Pro
By Richard Delhaie
I lay a lot of hardwood flooring and had always had an artistic problem with putting quarter-round against base molding in old construction - it just looked cheap. In small areas I would spend a few hours (and blades) using my Sonicrafter to undercut the base in order to make a clean, professional appearance. I have also used it to flush-cut plywood underlayment.
Then I saw this unit at a trade show and said for $100 bucks, let go for it. Unbelievable! This thing is soo fast and gives clean cuts too. The unit is strong as a horse and its attachments are easy to attach/remove. Some users may have an issue with its size as it is bigger & heavier than any other Roto-Zip I've ever seen.
The tool allows you to undercut existing base, leaving the perfect 1/16th spacing between base & you new flooring material. The head & cutting bit of the unit pivots 360 degrees - allowing you to cut all but the last 2 inches of an inside corner - this can easily be completed with an oscillating tool. The wood cutting bit that comes with the unit is carbide impregnated and last forever.
I've already have used it in 4 flooring jobs and have been nothing but pleased with the result. In addition, I recently used it to flush-cut plywood underlayment. It was soo much better (and safer) than a Sawzall.
This tool has save me hours - and I mean hours of "on your knees - sweat in your eyes" labor. It gives you to the opportunity to get the best professional looking job your skill will allow. This tool may not be for everyone, but a finish carpenter would love to have this thing in their truck.

Awesome saw
By Sqieke
I am using this saw to replace floor grout. It cuts very smoothly and creates little dust when you used with the dust management kit. Highly recommend for many home improvement projects. I am a woman who is very hands on and I love this saw!
