Poor battery quality

My roommate bought a combo pack equivalent to this one in November of 2012 and while we were working on a project recently the batteries would not support enough energy to cut through a 1x6 board or even drive in 6 screws. How in the world should a consumer purchase a product and pay good money only to have the product not perform after a little over a year? Porter Cable charges to have the batteries rebuilt and it is not a cheap expense. I have spoke with numerous customers of Porter Cable that have had the same issue with the battery life of Porter Cable power tools. My roommate said he would never buy this combo pack again.
