3Updated design foa an old favorite
By J. Cascio
I am a tile contractor, and the 3 3/8" saws have been a blessing to me for at least 15 years. Had the 9.6V for years, but as soon as the 14.4 model came out bought it. That was a huge improvement! Now those14.4 batteries are difficult to find and the saw is a bit noisy. So I bought this newer version last week. Even though the battery is much smaller, the saw still seems to have enough power, although maybe not as much torque as the 14.4. So far Ive just used the new one for 3/16th paneling, so haven't cut anything thick yet.
The low profile of the saw is helpful for me in getting under toe-kicks or into corners. I use these saws with a diamond dry cut blade for trimming tile or cutting through the grout joint between tiles when doing repairs or adding decorative accents to existing work.
The new saw is a bit shorter and dramatically lighter, so those are plusses! I am certain the battery life will be better with LiIon. Joe

Update after 3 weeks
Two issues that bear mentioning.
1. The battery life is noticeably shorter than my old 3 3/8ths saw. I was hoping for MORE, not less
2. The clips that hold the battery in the saw are really, really tight. To pop the battery out, I have to set the handle on something and with both hands REALLY squeeze the tabs and pull, or even pry the battery pack out. This may loosen up over time, but right now it is challenging and irritating !

4Compact battery operated saw
By I. Maine
Let me start by saying that I gave this saw 4-out-of-5 stars only because of the relatively short battery life. That having been said, this is a pretty useful tool.... IF you need a small cutting saw. I am restoring a house built in 1870, so I run into a lot of situations where I am cutting floors and old plaster walls in very tight spaces. In these situations the Makita saw has been a pleasure to use.
Technically there must have been a battery revolution recently since several companies are making these light, compact, rechargeable, 12-volt batteries. The batteries that came with the Makita saw are ALMOST the same exact shape as the rechargeable 12-volts that came with my compact Ridgid drill. They are so close that it's a shame Makita and Emerson engineers didn't collaborate and design the same socket based on exactly the same batteries since they appear to almost certainly be manufactured at the same Chinese factory. Then I could have interchanged the battery rechargers on the job site.
This particular 3-3/8 inch compact saw is light-years ahead of the Dewalt 4-1/4 battery powered saw it replaced. I think the Makita cuts so much better because the blades are very thin and this seems to make all the difference in these low power battery operated saws. The Dewalt blades were slightly larger, thicker and heavier and this all added up to a miserable cutting experience. This Makita saw cuts thru wood and plaster nicely, if you take your time.
Lastly, for tight floor removal jobs, especially where you are restoring and saving the wood floors, this Makita saw works best in conjunction with the Fein straight-on cutting saw (or a Fein tool knock-off might work as well). I use the Fein saw to complete the cut in the corner of the radius that the small circular blade leaves. The Fein tool is better than bashing the last part out with a chisel.

3Very low powered motor, very little torque
By ZenReader
This is a very light, plastic saw, with a low powered motor. I've been using mine around the house for small jobs but it doesn't have the torque for large lumber. Even thick molding can be a struggle for the little motor. Needless to say it comes with the built in plastic sleeve, spring loaded to cover the blade. Combine the two with a blade that stalls and a tight sleeve this can make for some tedious moments. Its strength is its light, easy to handle, and gets in tight. The minus is its way under powered and can be very jumpy.
