4Solid
By M. Freedman
I am amazed at how sturdy and reliable this relatively inexpensive machine is. The belt system(rpm)is manual, but easy to change. Power enough to penetrate 4" oak, with so-so bits, and a sizable table for larger objects with room to clamp. The table lock is my least favorite aspect, small and awkward. I assembled this myself...don't! I was lucky, using..well, never mind. This sucker is heavy, and I'm only 150lbs. All in all, very happy, great shipping, arrived in under a week.

4Jet 17" drill press review
By Lisa A. Piszker
Recieved this drill press a few weeks ago. Built heavy duty, easy to put together with assistance from a friend due to weight. Lots and lots of power & speed. easy manual speed changes, comfortable handle throw, awesome oversized table. Only one complaint... run-out on the chuck/spindle is not true at all. Probably out a few thousanths. It is very noticable on the slower speeds but seems to balance out at higher rpms. The run-out is minimal enough though to do most any drilling accurately. Also the run down time as mentioned by others is longer than most but not an issue for me. Over all... a well built and performing machine for all the more you pay. Good deal and would buy it again.

4Nice drill press for the weekend woodworker
By Sunil
i bought this drill press about 3 months ago, and have used it often since then.

installation - piece of cake
the delivery guy brought it to my garage, and from there i unpacked and assembled it without issue. the motor assembly is pretty heavy, so i needed help to carry that out of the box and slide it on to the stand. although the box looked like it had gone through a lot, there was nothing wrong with any of the parts i got.

operations
the speeds are really easy to change, although i've only had to do it twice. you just release the tension, move the belts, and tension it back up. given how easy this was, it is hard for me to imagine justifying the money for a press with an automatic speed changer. it is really easy to secure bits into the chuck, and remove them afterwards, and it is straightforward to adjust the hole depth and table height. the spindles are a good size to facilitate drilling your hole. in general, no problem with most common operations.

the only things i would improve if i was jet would be:
1. it takes a little bit of time to spin down, and the stop button feels awkward when it is pressed (almost like i am breaking something). i didn't realize that the spin down time was long until i went to my local woodcraft store and i saw their press which just seemed to start and stop quicker.
2. the table rotates left and right, but there is not a stop for when you want it straight on (the normal position). because of this, i often have to take a little bit more time between drilling holes to make sure it did not rotate to one side or the other.
3. i don't use the laser at all. it was not aligned when i first assembled the press, and i've just been lazy about aligning it after the instructions looked longer than i felt like reading. a quick diagram would be nice.
4. the screws to set the depth stop sometimes get locked up, so you have to fiddle with it at times. i think this is due to poor manufacturing tolerances on the thread and screw fit, but i am guessing that just from feel.

would i buy it again? yes. i think it is a good value, given the depth of hole it can provide and the price.
