Everything the DWP849 lacked this has.... if you are polishing
By M. Koch
So far so good on this.... I ordered this from an outside source from Amazon (even though I was waiting for Amazon to have it first and at a comparable price)... anyway, before I had the DWP849 and it worked well for me for the application part but seemed temperamental when it came to being ran for a long period and me trying to press the trigger and it deciding that it did not want to start till it was ready. Was able to return to Amazon (benefits of Amazon) and placed myself on the product notification for the DWP849X. As mentioned I got it, and about a week earlier then offered here. What this DWP849X has is the rubber front, which was exposed on the DWP849 and caused one to be very nervous that if the polisher grabbed and jolted when not firmly held you could mare the paint. The RPM dial is in a better position and has a larger range. I took mine through all the speeds to know what the sounds were like just to make sure it was attenuating the speed correctly and from the sound, the revolutions increased and decreased accordingly. Benefits if you are planning to use a hook and loop pad the pad is provided for you in this case where before this was a separate purchase, and the yellow rim of the pad is soft cushioned and great for once again no marring the paint. Handle and finger pull and lock are easy and constant. It comes with both handle types, stick bar and u-grab bar. This seems well worth the extra few dollars when compared to the DWP849. At time of this write-up Amazon though was at 299.00 and others were around 200.00 with shipping and this is what I found also around the internet plus or minus 15.00. For a sander I am unsure of the benefits, but for the polisher aspect over the DWP849 I like it for the minimal price jump between the two models. If you have hand polished in the past, you will never go back once you feel the difference and the time you save... take the RPM's in the lower range (1200 - 1800) for most applications, and do not hold in one place or you will lift your paint.

Excellent tool with a few considerations
By Lisa
Bought this to polish our two cars - one is a traditional slick black paint and is 4 years old - the finish had lots of fine scratching from automatic car washing (no, I'm not the type to hand wash...I know it's better, but I just don't have the time). The other car is 6 months old and has a nice factory finish and I wanted to keep it bright and shiny. So far, this tool has done well. My brief observations are:
The tool is heavy duty - it runs continuously with no problem and can handle reasonably heavy loads. I wouldn't quite call it commercial grade but it is very close to it. The average pro working on cars will unlikely tap the tool's potential.
The tool does heat up after continuous use - it doesn't blow hot air from the cooling fan on the user, but there are a couple of metal spots on the body of the tool that get hot - the handles are fine but if you grab the body of the tool to set it down or pick it up, you won't get burned but it will get your attention.
The soft start feature is nice, but there is one quirk: Pulling the trigger too rapidly causes the tool to overshoot the targeted RPM. When the spindle is just starting, the constant RPM feature appears to adjust input voltage or current to maintain the RPM based on the user's input into the trigger. Pull the trigger a little too fast and the tool ramps up the power rather fast - if the tool isn't under load, the spindle will spin too fast and gradually settle into the target RPM. This isn't a big deal as any reasonable user will find the modulation perfect for polishing - but if your finger slips or you accidentally goose the trigger while using it, the tool will respond with a big jump in power. That can catch you off guard a little if you don't anticipate it. The tool has some logic in it - the trigger is more "fly by wire" than a traditional trigger. That's a good thing, but you have to re-train yourself a little to get the most out of it.
The tool is pretty quiet - it operates nice and smooth and at a reasonable sound level.
Weight it a tad heavy - if you use it all day long there is a trade-off between weight and the durability of the tool. I think this one is just right for how it is positioned, but the average joe will definitely notice his/her arms if you use it for a few hours and haven't done so before. Not a big deal, but it is worth noting.
The power cord is nice and beefy - no worries there.
The wool/lint filter for the cooling air intakes is a nice touch.
The nose end with the loop-style handle attached is a little tight when polishing around outside mirrors and a few other places, but overall the tool provides good clearances all around.
I'm not familiar with similar offerings from Porter Cable, but it looks like there are only a few big names that make a comparable polisher - I wouldn't think you will be displeased with any of them. I have owned a number of DeWalt power tools over the years and this one is on par with the quality you expect from them, if not better.

DeWalt DWP849X
By Mingo
I got this to replace a >20 year old DeWalt buffer that is about worn out. Overall this is what I expected after using the comparible model that I've had for many years. I like the grates over the air intakes and the rubber covers over the head part and handle,as well as a velcro disk is included, very nice features. Now for the down side, the "soft start" I hate, I'd much rather have the stright variable speed as the soft start is "jerkey" when it starts. This has lead to some close calls buffing near edges, it makes it hard to control when starting it near edges. I DO NOT like this feature AT ALL!!! If you'd call it a feature, more of a detrament than a positive feature, in my opinion. I'd defanatly have given it a 5 star plus rating otherwise. With >40 years buffing experiance on show cars I'm sure I can overcome the issues with it with further pratice. But, I'm sure this will cause some issues for people with limited buffing experiance. Use caution starting it near edges, it is very jerkey on starting, otherwise a great buffer overall. You'd be hard pressed to find a better buffer at this price point, just be aware of the "soft start" issue or you'll bite an edge with it.
