Black & Decker BDCD2204KIT 20-volt Max 4-Tool Combo Kit
By *rose*
This kit comes with a nice strong bag to hold all of the tools.
It also comes with 2 batteries which is great, because some kits only come with one. The batteries hold a good charge, but I had some problems getting the batteries to 'click' and connect when I changed the old one out for a fresh battery. For some reason the batteries didn't simply connect to the tools - I had to push them in a lot harder than I thought should be required.
These tools have ok power for a cordless kit. If I needed to use these types of tools all day I would still use a corded type. Or, I would use more powerful cordless models.
I found the drill torque to be insufficient when I was doing some repairs to a door jam. The drill struggled screwing in a 3 inch screw into wood. I almost gave up and took out my other drill. But, after some work, it finally got the screw in. I had pre-drilled a pilot hole so I was pretty disappointed the drill couldn't deal with screwing the screw in. It looks like it is best for lighter work.
I did really like the fast change blade feature on the reciprocating saw. I still have an older Makita reciprocating saw that works great but it has the allen wrench style blade changing and it does take time to do.
The light is really bright and can be adjusted which makes it very useful.
Overall I would say its a decent combo kit and the cordless tools are a great convenience.

Great kit for the right home user
By Water Monkey
I was intrigued by this kit. I am a fan of the cordless tool concept, but also leery about sufficient power. So, when I got this kit I was excited to put it through some tests. I currently own corded versions, from other manufacturers, of all the tools (except the flashlight) , so I have expectations of replacing them with corded versions.
Testing the drill
The drill included in this kit is the LDX220 which is the smaller cousin to the BDCDHP220. I own both, and while the BDCDHP220 is a larger and more powerful drill (25% more powerful), the LDX220 is a more practical fit for this kit. The LDX220 felt better balanced in my hand, and was able to accomplish most of the same tests.
Where you may have some issues is drilling larger holes. One of my tests was determining how large a spade bit I could use and drill several holes comfortably. The limit for this drill seemed to be a 7/8" spade. I was able to use a 1" spade, but it did catch often. But, for 90% of home users this is not a concern. So bottom line, the drill is great.
Testing the reciprocating saw (BDCR20)
I Currently own a 10 amp Dewalt reciprocating saw and I use it regularly. First off, holding the BDCR20 it is much lighter than my Dewalt. In fact, my first impression was that the BDCR20 was not comparable to my Dewalt. The test I ran with both saws was cross cutting through a redwood 4x4. To do this I had to use a different blade because the one provided in the kit was too small. Changing the blade is simple just flip a lever and exchange the blade. Here is where I noticed the first difference; the BDCR20 only allows you to position your blade vertically. My Dewalt allows a horizontal blade position. Not a major issue unless you cut horizontally often. As far as cutting the redwood, the BDCR20 did fine. It has enough power to make it through the redwood, but it had much more vibration than I am use to, and the cut seemed to be more ragged (this could be due to the vibration. I then tried it on a 2x4 and a 2x8. In both instances the cuts were fine and there was less vibration. I did not try the saw on cutting any metal because I did not have any scrap laying around. Once again, for most home users this will be fine.
Circular Saw BDCCS20B
The circular saw included in this kit is smaller than the average circular saw. This is a 5 1/2" saw blade compared to a 7 1/4. At this size you will be fine for sheet work and barely able to get through a standard 2x4. In fact, according to the B&D specs the depth of cut when beveled at a 45 is 1 3/8" (not enough to get through a 2x4). I ran some tests on some 3/4 ply and the saw performed well. The cuts were clean, and the lighter weight made it easy to handle.
The flashlight - I think it is included as more of an afterthought. It works. Not much testing . I popped in a battery and turned it on. It is nice that the battery acts as a stand.
This is a great kit for light home use. If you are not looking to invest hundreds of dollars in the separate tools, and you aren't doing major construction, this is a great kit. I am surprised that the cordless saws performed close to my corded versions. The fact that they are cordless is a huge bonus. This is a very nice set.

Black and Decker Tools
By Thomas P. Troyer
I ordered the Black and Decker 20-volt Max 4-tool Kit. It contains a cordless drill, circular saw, reciprocating saw and LED flashlight. I had previously bought and used extensively the Black and Decker Matrix Drill. I also purchased a couple of extra 20 volt lithium batteries. All five units use the same batteries.
Circular saw- this saw uses 5 1/2 inch blades which are somewhat limited. I found three on Amazon for between $10-$15. The blades can be changed easily. I tried the saw with a regular 2x4 and it cut through easiely, then a 11/2" x 4" very hard piece of oak. It still cut through easily. It is very light and portable, but powerful enough to do the job. The settings to make bevel cuts or depth changes seem to be good and easy to use. This is not a saw to use all day building a house, but is very nice for those jobs around the house or shop which can be done with a smaller unit. This is a saw for the weekend builder or as with myself, someone who already owns a heavy corded circular saw, but wants a smaller unit at times. I don't know how long the battery will last but judging by the Matix drill I own, it will be a reasonable time. I own four cordless drills and the lithium battery seems to last as well as the other types. When the lithium is out of juice, it doesn't run down gradually as other batteries do, it just stops. I would give the circular saw 4 out of 5 stars for the limited number of blade types available at this time.
Reciprocating Saw- Again this is very light in weight unit, cordless, with a lithium battery. Blades are easily available since the blades for other larger corded saws fit this saw. I tried cutting various pieces of softwood and hardwood with the same results I would have with the big, heavy, corded DeWalt that I have had for years. I also cut an 1/8 inch by 2 inch strap steel with ease. Unlike my old DeWalt the blades change very quickly and easily with this saw. The blades seem to flap a bit more when the saw is running without being in the process of cutting than other units I have used, but I don't see this as a problem. I would give this unit 5 out of 5 stars for its lightness and ease of blade changing.
Drill- the cordless drill is a bit smaller than the Black and Decker Matrix. My wife remarked, it was going to be her drill. It is very light in weight and seems to have good power. Like all cordless drills, it does not have the power of a good corded drill. If I have something very tough to go through, I still go back to my corded 30 year old drill. I drilled easily through a piece of 1-1/2 inch oak with a 7/8 inch spade bit. I also tried it with the 1/8 inch steel strap with 1/4 inch bit and it had no problem even at the end of the hole. The battery life is similar to my other cordless drills. I would give this drill 5 out of 5 stars as a lighter duty cordless drill. It is easy to hold, has good balance and has enough power to do most jobs around the house. When I'm doing cabinet work I like having a different drill for each part of the process. this has been a nice addition to my shop. It has something I have not used before, a light directed to where you are drilling, good idea.
LED Flashlight- the same batteries also fit this unit. It reminds me of the very old flashlights that came with a large square battery which the boy scouts used to use. The flashlight sits up nicely and can be swiveled up to go in any direction. This is truly a hands free light. As we have all become aware, the LED lights are very bright and last a long time on a battery. This is a keeper. I would give this 5 out of 5 stars.
I must mention that the manuals are very poor. The writing is confusing and are not user friendly, but most who buy these tools have a good idea how to use them anyway. It is mostly safety directives. The package comes with two batteries and a charger. The batteries may be left on the charger indefinitely without harming the batteries, which is nice for those who forget to take them off the charger. Overall this is a very good group of power tools for the price. They all fit into the tough canvas bag that comes with them for traveling to that project outside of the shop. I recommend this group of cordless tools for the start up shop or for those who like to have extras or like the new very light weight tools.
